Egypt

Some information for Egypt Visitors consisting mainly of notes and links

Take a look at this satellite photo.

The top is east. The water body at the bottom is the Red Sea.
The Sahara is evident, the distinction between upper and lower Egypt lies at the base of the cone of the delta of the Nile.
Note the cloud structures. These may be nascent hurricanes since they are generated over the Sahara, move to the east, cross the Atlantic and then grow (or do not) into hurricanes.

The Egyptian Museum is the main repository of Egyptian artifacts. This word document contains some notes on it.

Apparently there is still some controversy about the construction techniques used to construct the stone buildings.

Mud ramps were used. Remnants have been found in the Thebes/Luxor area.
More particularly the question is often raised about how humans lacking devices powered by energy from inanimate sources could accomplish such construction. The modern case of the coral castle may be instructive. The photographs at its website, shows exactly how much one thoughtful, but peculiarly motivated, individual can accomplish on his own.

Recently, a large modern temple complex has been created in Italy. Read the story.

Further, how was the stone cut and finished? Saw marks and other tool marks exist. It has been argued that the large monolithic obelisks were calved from the surrounding rock by using the force of wood wedges swollen by water. The pockets that were used may still be seen in abundance. Strangely, these pockets are wider at the top than at the bottom. In other words, it appears that upon expansion the wedges would have popped out of the holes rather than exert the cracking force.

A rather nice discussion of the development of Egypt is here.

A page which considers many of the oddities, curses, etc associated with Egypt may be found here.
